All Creatures Great and Small #51

Sound
The use of sound to determine the richness of a logged area of a forest was used in an area where the logged area was covered in linanas, a woody vine that climbs over the debris. The tape recorder and microphone were set for 120 hours of recording. The more noise, the greater the biodiversity. Rain drops, bird songs and other sounds were recorded. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2024.110488

Sarawak Malay Drum
The Sarawak Malay Drum is used in celebrations such as a wedding and after completion of al-Quran recitation and other great events in Malay culture. The sound of the drum is derived from old Arab musical tradition. A comparison was made of drums constructed from belian and durian wood. The amplitude of the belian wood remained constant over a longer period of time than the one constructed from Durian. DOI:10.15376/biores.19.2.2065-2076

Timber
This research evaluates timber as building materials that reflects the characteristics of Sarawak. The industry’s decline in the use of wood in buildings points to limited supply, and a preference for exporting timber overseas for better prices. DOI: http://doi.org/10.35370/bjost.2024.6.1-07

Miri Industrial Heritage
Nowadays, industrial heritage can be seen in historic factories, refineries, drilling towers, mills, railways, lighthouses, other old buildings and structures, and historic documents. Miri, the state’s second-largest city, which was commonly known as ‘The Oil Town’ before assuming its current moniker ‘Resort City’ has the potential to highlight her industrial heritage. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/94325

Rice
Aroma plays a vital role in consumer preferences. Therefore, it is essential to identify rice with considerable aroma for promotion and to reduce the consumer demand for imported high-quality rice. This study shows Kenawit, Gertok, Pandan, Nangka, Tiga Bulan, Lumpur, Grik, Sanguo Pandan, Kurau, Bidor, and Wangi ,(we eat Wangi) which can be further promoted as potential donors for breeding. J. Anim. Plant Sci., 34 (2) 2024

Cooking Shrimp
Sesar unjur is a distinctive Sarawakian delicacy primarily found in Melanau areas, including Mukah, Matu, Sarikei, and Igan. Its unique taste commands a high market value, often reaching up to Ringgit Malaysia (RM) 200 per kilogram. Traditionally, the production of sesar unjur has relied on the use of white mangrove wood for smoking, imparting a characteristic flavor to the shrimp. However, alternative cooking methods must be found because of the loss of habitat. This study applies solar PV technology to support the operation of a smoke machine for sesar unjur processing. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.prime.2024.100459

Water Hyacinth
Water hyacinth is one of the most invasive and toxic aquatic weeds which detrimentally affects freshwater by hindering sunlight from reaching the zone of no sunshine and depleting oxygen level in water bodies. Water Hyacinth originated in the Amazon Basin of South America, and its invasiveness has expanded throughout the tropical and subtropical regions. It is crucial to manage the invasion. Water hyacinth was used as the main landing platform for the black soldier fly larvae production because the plant became a nuisance in most parts of Sarawak, especially in Mukah. The decaying plant has a potential to be used as organic fertilizer to promote crop growth and soil productivity. International Journal of Agriculture, Forestry and Plantation, Vol. 13 (Sept)

The Effect of Forest restoration on Butterfly diversity
The results of this study didn’t suggest there was a clear effect of forest restoration on measures of butterfly diversity, nor did this study identify any biologically clear associations between species richness and abundance of forest restoration. Cardiff University Regrow Borneo

Plants and Ants
Myrmecophytes are an association between ants and plants, where both plants and ants benefit. How did this relationship evolve? This paper shows the relationship is an evolutionary dead end. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ympev.2024.108028

Plants and Heights
Plants optimize traits to adapt to an environment. However, it is unclear whether these relationships are the results of evolution. The results between wet north Borneo and seasonally dry north Thailand suggest that the influence of traits on growth and survival largely depends on water availability. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11258-023-01394-2

New Research on Sri Vijaya
Dr Liam Kelly has disproved the theory that there was a Sri Vijaya, citing research that began in 1918 and how it was false. One problem was: Where was Sanfoqi? Once thought to be at the location where Sri Vijaya was once and thought to be located, he places the political entity in Cambodia. https://leminhkhai.blog/i-finally-found-sanfoqi/

New Species
Four new species of the plant medinilla have been made known to the western world from Borneo. DOI: 10.11646/PHYTOTAXA.637.1.2

Pitcher Plants
Nepenthe (nepenthaceae) is a tropical pitcher plant with leaf modifications into jug-shaped organs called pitcher. This plant lives in a habitat with poor nitrogen and phosphorus. Nepenthe consist of more than 140 species in the world and are mostly found in the Philippines (40 species), Sumatra (35 species), Borneo (34 species), and Peninsular Malaysia (19 species). Post-mining areas on Kalimantan Island is one of the suitable habitats for Nepenthe. Nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients are scarce in post-mining areas. They derive their nitrogen and phosphorus from the insects they capture. Nepenthe, in this habitat, adapt by increasing their breeding function. The plant has male and female flowers. When Nepenthe can produce more numbers and bigger sizes of males compared to females and females succeed in becoming fruit, then the conservation act of Nepenthe can be categorized as successful. https://doi.org/10.1051/bioconf/20249101012

New Species
A new species of moth from the genus Lajonquierea has been made known to science. The species was collected from the lowland rainforests of north Borneo. There are only eight species, five of which are in Borneo.doi.org/10.37828/em.2024.71.17

Doctoral Dissertation
New research has been performed linking fruit-loving mammals with seed dispersal in Indonesian Borneo. https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/handle/2027.42/192328/swapnan_1.pdf?sequence=1

Land Snails and one new sub species
This study provides a checklist of snails collected at Batu Kudik, a small and isolated limestone outcrop near Simunjan, Sarawak. A new subspecies is also described. Doi: 10.3897/BDJ.12.e115556
