Kuching Chinese Temple Hell

A Walk into the Gates of Hell:(黄泉)(地府)(九泉)

Walking toward The Chinese Temple Hong San Si of Jalan Petanak Kuching one should bear to the left. On this side of the temple is the entrance to the gates of hell. The doors are large and forbidding. As I eased one of the doors open there was a room but it was completely black inside. I snapped a few pictures without going in at what I thought was dim light. The results are below.

The concept of hell comes from Buddhism and Taoism. Although there is some disagreement between the two, the one thing they do agree is that it is for sinners. However, unlike the Christian faith, the souls may earn their way out of hell after an indeterminate time has passed. They will then return to earth or enter the heavenly mantra. 地獄.

These rulers in Hell are neither good or evil in the mortal world. They report to the Court of Heaven.

1. Diguan Dadi (地官大帝) -responsible for reporting deeds of humans to the heavenly court.

2. Dongyue Dadi (东岳大帝)-leader of the Mountain Gods. The highest authority in hell.

3. Fengdu Dadi (酆都大帝)supervisor of the ten judges of Chinese hell.

4. Houtu  (后土)to some, the supreme authority in hell

5. Yanluo Wang (阎罗王)- Yama-Buddhist king of hell determines the punishment of wicked souls
